James V. Forrestal served as Secretary of the Navy before being promoted to Secretary of Defense in July 1947. In March 1949, he resigned from this post due to a mental breakdown. In May 1949, he committed suicide at Bethesda Naval Hospital under suspicious circumstances. He was replaced by Gen. Walter Bedell Smith.
